Recommended Fruit and Vegetable Servings

Consuming the recommended fruit and vegetable servings is vital to good health. Sadly, not many people know the recommended fruit and vegetable servings. Even if they do, there is still a problem how to have the recommended fruit and vegetable servings.

The recommended servings of fruits and vegetables

Recommended Fruit and Vegetable Servings

The 2005 USDA Food Guide Pyramid suggests the recommended fruit and vegetable servings. The recommended fruit and vegetable servings in 2005 were increased to:

  • 2-4 daily for the recommended servings of fruits
  • 3-5 daily for the recommended servings of vegetables

This is part of USDA 's "5 a day" campaign and they note that people are particularly deficient in consumption of fruits. Even if you eat a lot of fruits a day, it is most likely still that you are not meeting the recommended fruit and vegetable servings.

Why are the recommended fruit and vegetable servings so hard to meet?

In the past, a fruit contained much more nutrients than nowadays. This is because of the change in soil quality, pollution level, environment, and so forth. When in the past, a pear a day would be all that people need daily, you may have to eat 20 pears a day to gain the same level of nutrients.

Americans' Eating Habit & the Recommended Fruit and Vegetable Servings

According to USDA:

  • Only 10% eat even 5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
  • Average fruit consumption is only 1.4 servings daily.
  • Only 17% eat 2-4 fruits daily.
  • Only 12% have what could be called a "good" diet.

Faculty members in the Harvard School of Public Health feel the revised government recommendations still fall short of the nutrients people need for good health. They are too heavily influenced by powerful food lobby groups, and do not put into perspective the wealth of research conducted during the last ten years that has reshaped the definition of healthy eating.

Their statement:

"If there's anything close to being "proved" in nutrition research, it's that eating lots of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of heart disease, some types of cancer, and other chronic diseases. The U.S. government's "5 a day" campaign makes five servings of fruits and vegetables look like a goal when it should actually be a lower limit."
